This is indeed a great excuse to try Linux. I recently ended up with Ubuntu on my machine, not because of the XP issue but because a hardware issue effed up my windows installation and I couldn't reinstall without butting up against "Windows Genuine Advantage"

So I'm a suddenly satisfied Linux User.

I'm not the dullest knife in the drawer, but I'm not the sharpest either. I have a very basic familiarity with Ubuntu (and other OS-ALT). Where did or would you start? Which version of Ubuntu did use?

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

has what you need. I chose a slightly different distribution but it has since been updated automatically. It's not for everyone, (some things are best accomplished from the command line) but I have been able to find open source software that does absolutely everything I used to do on Windows.
